Are you getting your daily Vitamin Sea?
Spending time in or near the ocean has been known to have a positive impact on both the body and the mind. There are numerous benefits associated with sea water that can help to improve overall wellbeing.
Elements in the seawater activate the body’s healing mechanisms. Rich in magnesium, potassium and iodine, seawater helps release stress, relax your muscles, promote deep sleep and spiritually cleanse your aura. Swimming in the sea has also been linked to stimulating the parasympathetic system which is responsible for rest and repair. These minerals can help to improve skin health, strengthen the immune system, and improve the functioning of the thyroid gland.
In addition, spending time in or near the ocean can also have a calming effect on the mind. The sound of the waves, the smell of the salt water, the warmth and vitamin D of the sun, and the feel of the sand all work together to create a peaceful and tranquil environment. This can help to reduce stress, improve mood, and promote relaxation.
Another benefit of sea water is that it can help to improve respiratory health. The salt water can help to clear the sinuses and reduce inflammation in the lungs, which can be beneficial for those who suffer from allergies or asthma.
In the cooler months, the ocean acts as a great option for cold exposure therapy. Spending 2-10 minutes (without a wetsuit!) in cold water is a powerful tool for improving both physical and mental health. Cold immersion can help reduce inflammation in the body. Exposure to cold temperatures causes blood vessels to constrict, which can help reduce swelling and inflammation. This can be particularly helpful for athletes or those who experience chronic pain or inflammation. Cold immersion can also boost circulation and improve overall cardiovascular health. When exposed to cold temperatures, the body produces more white blood cells and releases more oxygen into the bloodstream. This can help improve circulation and oxygenation of the body's tissues, which can lead to better overall health. Exposure to cold temperatures can help release endorphins, which can improve mood and reduce feelings of anxiety and stress.
I am so grateful to have a home and pilates studio by the ocean, where I can be sure to get my daily vitamin sea which I find incredibly grounding and nourishing. I recommend bringing your togs to class, for a post workout dip!
With love,
Anna
